Carapace pyriform and thickly covered with a coat of tomentum and curly hairs, dorsal surface being very uneven; in large speciments tomentum rubbed off for median part of carapace, but in young specimens the tomentum is dense, making a labyrhynth appearance. Rostral horns long, divergent at base and somewhat curved inward. Supraorbital tooth tuberculated. A large spine on each subhepatic margin, three on each branchial margin and one at posterior end of intestinal region. Chelipeds of male attains about twice as long as carapace; merus sparsely covered with tall tubercles; outer surface of carpus and upper proximal part of palm roughly covered with blunt tubercles; a tubercle at proximal part of prehensile edge of movable finger.
Distribution:
West Atlantic from Georgia through the West Indies to Brazil, 10-60 m deep.
Remarks:
The Pacific analogue, S. contigua Rathbun ranging from the Gulf of California to the west coast of the Lower California, has the rostral horns contiguous in the middle and only two spines on the branchial margin of carapace.
