Carapace swollen laterally, broader than long, being roughly triangular or rather longitudinally shortened diamond-shaped; dorsal surface with many conical tubercles which are symmetrically disposed and acute in smaller specimens; an oblique, deep furrow between gastric and branchial regions; somewhat heart-shaped cardiac region encircled by a wide shallow furrow, each posterolateral part of which is distinctly wrinkled. In dorsal view frontal region with eight tubercles arranged in two transverse rows. Hepatic margin with one spiniform tubercle, subhepatic region with two and anterolateral margin of branchial margin with three; last branchial tubercle forms lateral angle of carapace. Chelipeds of male heavily developed; in both sexes merus armed with five equidistant tubercles on outer border, three or four on upper surface and two on inner border. Ambulatory legs subcylindrical and tuberculated on anterior borders.

West, Indies, Venezuella and Suriname, from lower tidal zone to 55 m deep.
