Carapace depressed and elongate triangular in its outline, being covered with many small pieces of sponges, hydroids and others; dorsal surface uneven, and an obtuse tubercle each on mesogastric and cardiac regions; a downward-pointed laminate tubercle on hepatic margin. Rostral margin thin and hoof-shaped, with a somewhat compressed mound at proximal dorsal part of rostrum. Sternum of male with segments flattened and separated by deep, rather radiate furrows; part in front of abdomen divided into flattened protuberances. Chelipeds fringed with long setae. Ambulatory legs extremely long and fringed with rather sparse long setae and provided with equidistant bundles of some curly hairs on anterior borders of merus, carpus and propodus; dactyli very short and more or less hooked.
Distribution:
West Atlantic from North Carolina through the coasts of Florida and the West Indies to Brazil, 5-50 m deep.
Remarks:
The rostrum may be variable as to shape and length, and thus it is highly probable that P. algicola (Stebbing) is synonymous with this species.
