Counts：D ⅩⅠ～ⅩⅡ, 29～30; A Ⅱ, 8; GR 4+8=12.
特 徴：
（科）：背鰭は深い欠刻を有するか，または完全に分離する。尾鰭は2叉しない。臀鰭棘は1～2本。頭部の大部分は鱗を被る。側線は尾鰭の後端に達する。下顎にひげを有するものがある。（属）：下顎下面の頂部に房状をなす3対のひげがあり，さらにその後方の下顎内縁に10対以上の細く短いひげが並ぶ。（種）：胸鰭は短く，その先端は肛門に達しない。体側に暗色斜縞がある。
分 布：
ベネズエラからアルゼンチン。
備 考：
西部大西洋に生息する本属の他の1種P. elegansフサニベは，胸鰭が長くその先端が臀鰭起部を越え，体側に暗色斜縞がないことにより本種と区別できる。

Distinctive characters：
(Family)：Dorsal fin with a deep notch or completely divided in two. Caudal fin not furcated. Anal fin with 1～2 spines. Head mostly covered with scales. Lateral line extending to hind margin of caudal fin. Lower jaw with a single or more barbels in some species. (Genus)：Lower jaw with 3 pairs of barbels in a tuft at apex and more than 10 pairs of barbels along inner edge. (Species)：Pectoral fin short, its tip not reaching to anus. Dark oblique bands on side.
Distribution：
From Venezuela to Argentina.
Remarks：
Another species of this genus in western Atlantic, P. elegans, has long pectoral fin, its tip extending beyond origin of anal fin base, and no dark oblique band on side.
