(Family):Dorsal fin with a deep notch or completely divided in two. Caudal fin not furcated. Anal fin with 1〜2 spines. Head mostly covered with scales. Lateral line extending to hind margin of caudal fin. Lower jaw with a single or more barbels in some species. (Genus):Lower jaw with 3 pairs of barbels in a tuft at apex and more than 10 pairs of barbels along inner edge. (Species):Pectoral fin short, its tip not reaching to anus. Dark oblique bands on side.

From Venezuela to Argentina.
Remarks:
Another species of this genus in western Atlantic, P. elegans, has long pectoral fin, its tip extending beyond origin of anal fin base, and no dark oblique band on side.
