特 徴：
（科）：背鰭は深い欠刻を有するか，または完全に分離する。尾鰭は2叉しない。臀鰭棘は1～2本。頭部の大部分は鱗を被る。側線は尾鰭の後端に達する。下顎にひげを有するものがある。（属）：下顎にひげがない。下顎は上顎より突出する。両顎の歯は犬歯状で，通常は上顎前端部の1対が長大。歯の先端部は肥大しない。背鰭の棘部と軟条部は深い欠刻を有するか，またはたとえ完全に分離してもその間隔は棘部基底長より著しく小さい。（種）：胸部の鱗は円鱗であるが，体側部の他の部分は櫛鱗。背鰭軟条部と臀鰭の基底部は1～2列の鱗を被る。上顎の後端は眼の後縁下に達する。眼径は頭長の17.9～19.1％。体側上部に暗色斑点がない。背鰭軟条は24～29本，臀鰭軟条は8～10本，鰓耙は9～12本（Chao, 1978）。

Distinctive characters：
(Family)：Dorsal fin with a deep notch or completely divided in two. Caudal fin not furcated. Anal fin with 1～2 spines. Head mostly covered with scales. Lateral line extending to hind margin of caudal fin. Lower jaw with a single or more barbels in some species. (Genus)：Lower jaw without barbel. Tip of lower jaw projecting beyond upper jaw. Teeth on jaws canine-like, usually a pair of anteriormost teeth on upper jaw longest. Tips of teeth not arrow-headed. Spinous and soft portions of dorsal fin with a deep notch, or if any completely divided, a gap between them extremely shorter than base of spinous dorsal fin. (Species)：Side of body with ctenoid scales except cycloid scales on breast. Soft dorsal and anal fins covered with 1 or 2 scale rows at base. Posterior margin of upper jaw reaching to posterior margin of eye. Eye diameter 17.9～19.1％ of HL. Dorsal side of body without dark spots. Dorsal soft rays 24～29, anal soft rays 8～10, and gill rakers 9～12 (Chao, 1978).
Distribution：
From Venezuela to Brazil.
