Counts：D ⅩⅠ, 26～28; A Ⅲ, 7～8;GR 8～9+14～15=23～24.
特 徴：
（科）：背鰭は深い欠刻を有するか，または完全に分離する。尾鰭は2叉しない。臀鰭棘は1～2本。頭部の大部分は鱗を被る。側線は尾鰭の後端に達する。下顎にひげを有するものがある。（属）：下顎下面の内縁に3～5対の細く短いひげが並ぶ。前鰓蓋骨に多数の強い棘がある。（種）：体側上部に多数の細い暗色斜縞がある。背鰭に暗色斑点が散在しない。
分 布：
アンチル諸島，ベネズエラからアルゼンチン。
備 考：
西部大西洋に生息する本属の他の1種M. undulatusは体側上部と背鰭に多数の暗色斑点が散在することで本種と区別できる。

Distinctive characters：
(Family)：Dorsal fin with a deep notch or completely divided in two. Caudal fin not furcated. Anal fin with 1～2 spines. Head mostly covered with scales. Lateral line extending to hind margin of caudal fin. Lower jaw with a single or more barbels in some species. (Genus)：Lower jaw bearing 3～5 pairs of small barbels along its inner edgds, without a tuft of barbels at apex. Preopercular margin with many strong spines. (Species)：Dorsal side of body with many oblique dark streaks along scale rows. Dorsal fin without scattered dark spots.
Distribution：
From Antilles, Venezuela, to Argentina.
Remarks：
Another species of this genus in the western Atlantic, M. undulatus, has scattered dark spots on dorsal side of body and on dorsal fin.
