特 徴：
（科）：背鰭は深い欠刻を有するか，または完全に分離する。尾鰭は2叉しない。臀鰭棘は1～2本。頭部の大部分は鱗を被る。側線は尾鰭の後端に達する。下顎にひげを有するものがある。（属）：下顎にひげがない。下顎は上顎より突出しない。前鰓蓋骨に強い棘がない。背鰭軟条は45本以上。背鰭棘部の高さは頭長より著しく大きい。（種）：頭部と体側に3本の幅広い暗色斜縞がある。背鰭軟条部と尾鰭に淡色斑点がない。背鰭軟条は47～55本。
分 布：
ノース・カロライナから，バーミューダ，メキシコ湾，カリブ海，ブラジル。
備 考：
本属によく似るParequesウサギニベ属は背鰭軟条が41本以下であることにより区別される。本属の1種E. punctatusは背鰭条部と尾鰭に淡色の斑点があり，背鰭軟条が45～47本であることにより本種と区別できる。

Distinctive characters：
(Family)：Dorsal fin with a deep notch or completely divided in two. Caudal fin not furcated. Anal fin with 1～2 spines. Head mostly covered with scales. Lateral line extending to hind margin of caudal fin. Lower jaw with a single or more barbels in some species. (Genus)：Lower jaw without barbel. Tip of lower jaw not projecting beyond upper jaw. Preopercular margin without spine. Dorsal fin with more than 45 soft rays. Height of spinous dorsal fin extremely longer than HL in all stages. (Species)：Head and side of body with 3 oblique dark bars. Soft dorsal and caudal fins without pale spot. Dorsal fin with 47～55 soft rays.
Distribution：
From North Carolina, Bermuda, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, to Brazil.
Remarks：
Pareques is distinguishable from this genus by less than 41 dorsal soft rays. Another species of this genus, E. punctatus, is distinguishable from this species by having pale spots on soft dorsal and caudal fins, and 45～47 dorsal soft rays.
