Lateral line extending to hind margin of caudal fin. Lower jaw with a single or more barbels in some species. (Genus):Lower jaw without barbel. Mouth strongly oblique. Lower jaw projecting beyond upper jaw. Teeth of jaws minute, in uniserial or narrow bands. Body strongly compressed. (Species):Side of body without vertical dark bar.
Distribution:
From Caribbean Sea to Brazil.
Remarks:
Another species of this genus in western Atlantic, L. fasciatus, has 7〜9 vertical dark bars on side. (Uyeno and Sato)
