(Family):Dorsal fin with a deep notch or completely divided in two. Caudal fin not furcated. Anal fin with 1〜2 spines. Head mostly covered with scales. Lateral line extending to hind margin of caudal fin. Lower jaw with a single or more barbels in some species. (Genus):Lower jaw without barbel. Tip of lower jaw not projecting beyond upper jaw. Preopercular margin without spine. Dorsal fin with less than 41 soft rays. Height of spinous dorsal fin shorter than HL in sdults. (Species):Side with 3〜5 broad longitudinal stripes wider than pupil and narrower stripes between them.
Distribution:
From Maryland, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, to Brazil.
Remarks:
Equetus is distinguishable from this genus by dorsal fin having more than 45 soft rays. Another species in western Atlantic, P. umbrosus, is distinguishable from this species by having 7〜10 longitudinal stripes narrower than pupil on side.
