(Family):Dorsal fin with a deep notch or completely divided in two. Caudal fin not furcated. Anal fin with 1〜2 spines. Head mostly covered with scales. Lateral line extending to hind margin of caudal fin. Lower jaw with a single or more barbels in some species. (Genus and Species):Lower jaw without barbel. Tip of lower jaw projecting beyond upper jaw. Teeth on jaws canine-like with arrow-headed tips, exposed externally when mouth closed. A pair of anteriormost teeth on upper jaw usually longest. Dorsal fin with a notch between spinous and soft portions, not separated completely.
Distribution:
From Benezuela to southern Brazil.
Remarks:
This is the only western Atlantic species in this genus.
