Counts：D Ⅷ～Ⅸ, 19～20; A Ⅱ, 18～19; GR 2+8～10=10～12.
特 徴：
（科）：背鰭は深い欠刻を有するか，または完全に分離する。尾鰭は2叉しない。臀鰭棘は1～2本。頭部の大部分は鱗を被る。側線は尾鰭の後端に達する。下顎にひげを有するものがある。（属・種）：下顎にひげがない。下顎は上顎より突出する。両顎の歯は犬歯状で，上顎前端部の1対は長大。歯の先端部は肥大しない。背鰭の棘部と軟条部は大きく離れ，その間隔は棘部基底長にほぼ等しい。
分 布：
パナマからブラジル南部。
備 考：
本属魚類は西部大西洋から本種のみが報告されている。

Distinctive characters：
(Family)：Dorsal fin with a deep notch or completely divided in two. Caudal fin not furcated. Anal fin with 1～2 spines. Head mostly covered with scales. Lateral line extending to hind margin of caudal fin. Lower jaw with a single or more barbels in some species. (Genus and Species)：Lower jaw without barbel. Tips of lower jaw projecting beyond upper jaw. Teeth on jaws canine-like, a pair of anteriormost teeth on upper jaw longest. Tips of teeth not arrow-headed. Dorsal fin with a wide gap between spinous and soft portions, its width equal to basal length of spinous portion.
Distribution：
From Panama to southern Brazil.
Remarks：
This is the only western Atlantic species in this genus.
