(Family):Urogenital opening immediately behind anus. Usually two dorsal fins. Scales usually armed with spinules. (Genus):Anus situated midway between pelvic bases and origin of anal fin or slightly anterior. Two black dermal windows of light organ present, one between pelvic bases and another just in front of anus. Lower jaw teeth in single row. Dark band present along anterolateral margin of snout. Lower part of branchiostegal membrane scaly. (Species):Second spinous ray of 1st dorsal fin weakly serrated. Pelvic fin rays 8. Outer teeth of upper jaw enlarged, canine-like and widely spaced. Interorbital width 19.6〜23.1% of HL. Orbital rim and lips blackish.
Distribution:
Middle western Atlantic and west coast of Africa.
Remarks:
The present species is very close to Malacocephalus sp. (Iwamoto, 1970) but is distinguished by having the narrower interorbital (20〜23% of HL cf. 27〜31 in Malacocephalus sp.) and blackish orbital rim and lips (not blackish in Malacocephalus sp.). (Arai)
