(Family):Urogenital opening immediately behind anus. Usually two dorsal fins. Scales usually armed with spinules. (Genus):Anus situated midway between pelvic bases and origin of anal fin or slightly anterior. A black dermal window of light organ between pelvic bases. Second spinous ray of 1st dorsal fin serrated. Gill rakers on 1st arch less than 12. No dark band along anterolateral margin of snout. (Species):Mouth very large, upper jaw 41.0〜44.9% HL. Suborbital ridge somewhat developed. Outer teeth of upper jaw extremely enlarged and widely spaced. Gill rakers on inner side of 2nd arch 10〜11. Gill opening beginning below posterior end of mandible. Underside of snout, gular part, and branchiostegal membrane naked. Pelvic fin rays 9〜10. Chin barbel long, 20.6〜30.8% of HL. Scales below lateral line 25〜33.

Middle western Atlantic.
Remarks:
A closely related species N. africana has fewer pelvic fin rays (8) and fewer scales below lateral line (21)(Iwamoto, 1970). (Arai)
