(Family): Urogenital opening immediately behind anus. Usually two dorsal fins. Caudal fin absent. Scales usually armed with spinules. (Genus): Head flagile, covered with thin membrane. Anus situated near anal fin origin. Ventral light organ with two lenses, one much before pelvic bases and another in front of anus, both connected by a blackish stripe. Minute black striae present on ventrolateral surface from head to abdomen. (Species): Pelvic fin rays usually 11. Chin barbel present, its length 12.3〜15.1% HL. Spinous ray of 1st dorsal fin smooth.
Distribution:
Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Indian Ocean.
Remarks:
Four species of this gunus are known from the Atlantic, the present species is distinguishable from others by the pelvic fin ray counts and length of the barbel. (Arai)
