Specimens examined:8 (HL 43~59 mm, TL 170+~214+ mm).
Counts:BR 6; D (1st) Ⅱ, 7~9; P1 18~20; P2 7; GR (inner side of 1st arch) 1~2+9~10.

特 徴:
 (科): 泌尿生殖口は肛門直後に開く。背鰭は通常2基。尾鰭はない。(属): 第1背鰭第2棘前縁は円滑。肛門は通常臀鰭起部直前に開く。頭部には変形鱗からなる隆起縁がある。腹鰭条数は7。(種・亜種): 吻端に3個の変形鱗の突起があり,その幅は両眼間隔の半分以下(図)。吻背面両側の無鱗域は狭い。吻下面はほとんど鱗を被る。腹鰭基底間に小さな黒色長円形無鱗域の発光器がある。体側鱗上の小棘は針状で強く斜きサイコロの五の目状に近い配列をする。口腔内は黒色。体背側面に2~3条の黒色鞍状斑がある。頭長百分率:吻長33.0~36.8%; 眼窩径32.1~34.8%; 上顎長25.6~30.3%; ヒゲ長6.2~9.8%。
分 布:
 西大西洋。
備 考:
 C. c. coelorhincusでは吻長(30~35%HL)がわずかに短く,眼窩径(34~40%HL)・上顎長(27~31%HL)・ヒゲ長(10~14%HL)はわずかに長い(Marshall and Iwamoto, 1973)。 (荒井)
Distinctive characters:
(Family): Urogenital opening immediately behind anus. Usually two dorsal fins. Caudal fin absent. Scales usually armed with spinules. (Genus): Spinous ray of 1st dorsal fin smooth. Anus usually situated in front of anal fin. Head ridges of modified scales developed. Pelvic fin rays 7. (Species and subspecies): Three spines on snout tip, their span less than half of interorbital (Fig.). Naked areas on each side of dorsal surface of snout narrow. Underside of snout mostly covered with scales. Spinules on body scales arranged in near quincunx order. A small oval blackish dermal window of ventral light organ present between pelvic bases. Oral cavity blackish; two or three blackish saddle marks on dorsolateral aspect of body. Snout 33.0~36.8%, orbit 32.1~34.8%, barbel 6.2~9.8% of HL, respectively.
Distribution:
 Western Atlantic.
Remarks:
 C. c.coelorhincus has shorter snout (30~35% HL), longer orbit (34~40% HL), longer upper jaw (27~31% HL), and longer barbel (10~14% HL) (Marshall and Iwamoto, 1973). (Arai)
