C. c. coelorhincusでは吻長(30〜35%HL)がわずかに短く,眼窩径(34〜40%HL)・上顎長(27〜31%HL)・ヒゲ長(10〜14%HL)はわずかに長い(Marshall and Iwamoto, 1973)。 (荒井)
Distinctive characters:
(Family): Urogenital opening immediately behind anus. Usually two dorsal fins. Caudal fin absent. Scales usually armed with spinules. (Genus): Spinous ray of 1st dorsal fin smooth. Anus usually situated in front of anal fin. Head ridges of modified scales developed. Pelvic fin rays 7. (Species and subspecies): Three spines on snout tip, their span less than half of interorbital (Fig.). Naked areas on each side of dorsal surface of snout narrow. Underside of snout mostly covered with scales. Spinules on body scales arranged in near quincunx order. A small oval blackish dermal window of ventral light organ present between pelvic bases. Oral cavity blackish; two or three blackish saddle marks on dorsolateral aspect of body. Snout 33.0〜36.8%, orbit 32.1〜34.8%, barbel 6.2〜9.8% of HL, respectively.

Remarks:
C. c.coelorhincus has shorter snout (30〜35% HL), longer orbit (34〜40% HL), longer upper jaw (27〜31% HL), and longer barbel (10〜14% HL) (Marshall and Iwamoto, 1973). (Arai)
