Distinctive characters:
(Family): Urogenital opening immediately behind anus. Usually two dorsal fins. Caudal fin absent; dorsal and anal fins continuous. Scales usually armed with spinules. (Genus): Head soft, large and rounded. One dorsal fin; its height subequal to that of anal. Pelvic fin absent. Jaws very protrusible. No chin barbel. (Species): Upper jaw bearing very wide band of minute teeth; lower jaw narrow band of similar teeth. Gill rakers long and slender. Head completely covered with scales except for lips; body scales very small, armed with several erect spinules.
Distribution:
Atlantic, Indian Ocean and western Pacific.
Remarks:
The identification tentatively follows Marshall and Tåning (1966). However, the type specimen of M. inflaticeps should be compared with the present material. (Arai)
