Body deep and strongly compressed, body depth 2.0 in SL. Dorsal profile of snout steep and slightly concave. lower jaw projecting beyond upper jaw. Posterior end of upper jaw reaching to below anterior margin of eye. Weak scutes on straight part of lateral line. Pectoral fin falcate, longer than head. Pelvic fin small. Anterior rays of soft dorsal and anal fins not elongated. Scales on body very small cycloid. Bilateral paired caudal keels present. Caudal fin forked. Body bluish silver dorsally, silver-white ventrally; a small black spot on posterior margin of opercle; dorsal, pectoral, and caudal fins dusky yellow; pectoral and pelvic fins white.
Distribution:
From Nova Scotia to Argentina.
Remarks:
This species is separable from other species of Selene by the lower body, the higher number of gill rakers, and the bilateral paired keels on the caudal peduncle. (Matsuura)
