Body elongate and slightly compressed, body depth 3.4〜3.6 in SL. Posterior edge of upper jaw reaching to below anterior margin of pupil. Eye large with a well developed adipose eyelid. Teeth small, arranged in bands on upper jaw and forming a single row on lower jaw. Straight part of lateral line with 34〜35 scutes. Lower part of shoulder girdle margin with a deep furrow, a large papilla immediately above it. Pectoral fin falcate, shorter than head. Body except for a small area behind pectoral fin covered with small cycloid scales. Caudal fin forked. Body greenish blue dorsally, silver-white ventrally; snout dusky; a small black spot on upper posterior part of opercle; dorsal and caudal fins dusky; other fins pale.
Distribution:
Tropical and subtropical regions of the world.
Remarks:
The genus Selar resembles Decapterus and Trachurus but differs from the former by lacking of finlets and from the latter by a deep furrow on the lower part of the shoulder girdle. (Matsuura)
