本種はC. hippos, C. latus, C. lugbrisに似るが,本種では楯状鱗数が48〜48枚と多い(他の3種では22〜39枚)ので区別できる。また,C. bartholomaeiとC. ruberでは上顎の後端が眼の前縁下に達しないので区別できる。 (松浦)
Distinctive characters:
Body elongate and moderately compressed, body depth 3.0 in SL. Posterior edge of upper jaw reaching to below center of eye. Straight part of lateral line with 45〜48 strong scutes. Pectoral fin falcate, longer than head. Body covered with small scales. Spines of dorsal fin shorter than anterior lobe of soft dorsal fin. Spines of anal fin prominent and movable. Caudal fin forked, upper and lower lobes about equal in length. body dark greenish blue dorsally, silver-white ventrally; all fins dusky.
Distribution:
From Nova Scotia to Brazil.
Remarks:
This species resembles C. hippos, C. latus and C. lugbris but differs from them by having the higher number of scutes(45〜48 against 22〜39). It is distinguishable from C. bartholomaei and C. ruber in which the posterior end of the upper jaw does not reach to the anterior margin of eye. (Matsuura)
