Body elliptical and strongly compressed, body depth 2.5 in SL. Posterior edge of upper jaw reaching to below anterior margin of eye. Eye small with a weak adipose eyelid. Teeth on both jaws very small, arranged in a single row. Straight part of lateral line with 46 scutes. Pectoral fin falcate, longer than head. Body covered with small scales. Spines of dorsal fin shorter than anterior lobe of soft dorsal fin. Caudal fin deeply forked, upper lobe longer than lower. Body dark greenish-blue, silver-white ventrally; a large black blotch on opercle; edge of dorsal fin black, other fins pale.
Distribution:
From North Carolina to Brazil.
Remarks:
This species is similar to Chloroscombrus chrysurus in the body shape, but is distinguishable from it by the following points:the difference in the number of scutes(46 against 6〜12), seven spines in the first dorsal fin against to eight, and no black spot on the caudal peduncle. (Matsuura)
