Body elongate and rounded, body depth 5.4 in SL. Posterior edge of upper jaw reaching to below anterior margin of eye. Eye large with a well developed adipose eyelid. Teeth of both jaws small and arranged in single row. Straight part of lateral line with 37 scutes, curved part of lateral line covered with slightly enlarged scales. Pectoral fin falcate, shorter than head. Terminal dorsal and anal fin rays each forming a widely detached finlet. Body covered with small cycloid scales. Caudal fin forked. Body dark blue dorsally, silver-white ventrally; a small black blotch on upper posterior margin; caudal fin dusky, other fins pale.
Distribution:
North Carolina and Bermuda to Suriname. Found also in St. Helena in the eastern Atlantic.
Remarks:
This species is similar to D. macarellus and D. punctatus but differs from the former by the number of scutes(37 ageinst 23〜32) and differs from the latter by no small black spots on the curved part of the lateral line. (Matsuura)
