(Family):Head large with many spines; infraorbital stay developed; caudal fin not forked. (Genus):Dorsal spines 12; dorsal soft rays less than 10; lateral line scales with tube and pore; cranium robust with supraocular and postocular spine; body covered with cycloid scales; lateral line complete reaching caudal fin base. (Species):Occipital pit present; 3〜4 spines on a part of preorbital overlapping maxillary (2 in specimens smaller than SL 40 mm); large white spots on dark background in inner basal part of pectoral fin (unclear in specimens smaller than SL 30 mm); reaches SL 350 mm.
Distribution:
Eastern Pacific, western Atlantic from Massachusetts to Brazil; St. Helena and Ascension Islands. (Uyeno and Sato)
