Specimens examined：3 (SL 154.4〜172.7 mm).
Counts：D �]�U〜�]�T, 9; A �V, 5; P₁ 18〜19; GR 5〜6+11=16〜17.

　（科）：頭部が大きく，多くの棘がある。眼下骨棚が発達している。尾鰭は2叉しない。（属）：背鰭棘は12本（例外的に13本）。背鰭軟条は10本以下。側線鱗には管が開口している。頭骨は頑丈で，眼上棘と眼後棘がある。体は円鱗で覆われる。側線は尾鰭の基部まで伸びる。（種）：後頭窩がある。眼前骨の主上顎骨に重なる部分に成魚では3〜4本の棘がある。前鰓蓋骨の第1棘は小棘を備える。胸鰭の内側基部に暗褐色の点が存在しない。体色は淡く，黒斑があるのみである。 　北米東岸ジョージア，サウス・カロライナからメキシコ湾，カリブ海を経てブラジル沖に至るまで分布する。　（上野・佐藤） 　(Family)：Head large with many spines; infraorbital stay developed; caudal fin not forked. (Species)：Occipital pit present; 3〜4 spines present in adult on a part of preorbital overlapping maxillary; supplemental preopercular spine present; no dark spots at inner basal part of pectoral fin; body coloration pale in general, with some dark pigments.
