(Family):Head large with many spines; infraorbital stay developed; caudal fin not forked. (Genus):Dorsal spines 12; dorsal soft rays less than 10; lateral-line scales with tube and pore; cranium robust with supraocular and postocular spine; body covered with cycloid scales; lateral line complete reaching caudal fin base. (Species):Occipital pit present; 2 spines present on a part of preorbital overlapping maxillary; supplemental preopercular spine present. Dark brown spots present in inner part of pectoral fin.
Distribution:
Western Atlantic, from Virginia, Gulf of Mexico to Brazil.
Remarks:
One of the most common scorpionfishes in western Atlantic, and found in shallow water to depth of 100 m (Eschmeyer, 1965a; 1969). (Uyeno and Sato)
