Specimens examined：4 (SL 69.2～104.0 mm). Depth：77 m.
Counts：D ⅩⅡ, 9; A Ⅲ, 5; P1 20; GR 4～5+9～10=13～15.
特 徴：
（科）：頭部が大きく，多くの棘がある。眼下骨棚が発達している。尾鰭は2叉しない。（属）：背鰭棘は12本（例外的に13本）。背鰭軟条は10本以下。側線鱗には管が開口している。頭骨は頑丈で，眼上棘と眼後棘がある。体は円鱗で覆われる。側線は尾鰭の基部まで伸びる。（種）：後頭窩がある。眼前骨の主上顎骨に重なる部分に2本の棘がある。前鰓蓋骨の第1棘は小棘を備える。胸鰭の内側基部に暗褐色の点が存在しない。眼は大きく吻長の1.5～2.2倍。胸鰭は長く臀鰭の後端近くに達する（幼魚では短い）。側線上方に垂直に並ぶ鱗列数は50以下である。
分 布：
北米大西洋岸，メキシコ湾からスリナム沖にかけて分布する。
備 考：
S. albifimbriaでは眼径が吻長の0.9～1.5倍，胸鰭が臀鰭第3棘より先には達しない。臀鰭第2棘はS. albifimbriaでは第3棘より長いが，S. agassiziiでは第3棘と等しいか短い（Eschmeyer, 1965a; 1969）。 （上野・佐藤）

(Genus)：Dorsal spines 12; dorsal soft rays less than 10; lateral line scales with tube and pore; cranium robust with supraocular and postocular spine; body covered with cycloid scales; lateral line complete reaching caudal fin base. (Species)：Occiptital pit present; 2 spines present on a part of preorbital overlapping maxilla; supplemental preopercular spine present; no dark spot in inner basal part of pectoral fin; eye large being 1.5～2.2 times of snout length; pectoral fin long reaching end of anal fin in adult.
Distribution：
From Gulf of Mexico to Suriname. (Uyeno and Sato)
