Distinctive characters:
(Family):Gill opening wide. Caudal joints to dorsal and analfins. Anterior nostril well above upper lip. Supramaxillary present. (Genus):Pelvic fin with a single filamentous ray, inserted below preopercle; length shorter than head. No marking on body. Opercular spine single, strong and straight. Developed gill rakers 17〜27. Pectoral fin without free rays. Basibranchial tooth patch one. (Species):Upper jaw extending beyond hind margin of eye. Preopercle with three spines along hind margin, inferior two spines stronger. Scales small, deciduous; head wholly covered with scales except for lips and branchiostegal membrane.
Distribution:
Middle western Atlantic.
Remarks:
Cohen and Nielsen (1978) point out that the genus is in need of revision. (Arai)
