(Family):Gill opening wide. Caudal joints to dorsal and anal fins. Anterior nostril well above upper lip. Supramaxillary present. (Genus):Lateral line scales very large. Pectoral fin absent in adults. Scales arranged in regular rows. Head bone weekly ossified. (Species):Basibranchial tooth patch absent. Opercle with two flexible flat spines directed posteriorly and inferiorly. Preopercle with a deep notch on posterior margin; no flexible spine. Body scales relatively large; scales below lateral line about 16. Developed gill rakers 9〜11.
Distribution:
Indian Ocean, East Pacific and the western North Atlantic.
Remarks:
L. illustris (eastern tropical Pacific) has a shallow notch on the posterior margin of preopercle (Garman, 1899). L. fragils (Indian Ocean) has no notch and three flexible flat spines on posterior mergin of preopercle and numerous gill rakers (22〜25) (Nybelin, 1957). (Arai)
