(Genus):A well developed spine at snout tip directed anteriorly. Pelvic fin inserted below orbit. Body scales round, arranged in regular rows. Barbel absent. Basibranchial tooth patch absent. (Species):Round brown blotches present on body; black blotches present along margin of dorsal fin; pectoral fin pale; middle rays of caudal fin pale. Developed gill rakers on 1st arch 4; gill arch pale. Pelvic fin length 39〜43% of HL.
Distribution:
North-east coast of South America.
Remarks:
A related species L. jeannae known from the western North Atlantic has smaller blotches on bady and more numerous rays of dorsal and anal (135〜139 and 112〜116, respectively) than L. pheromystax (Robins, 1960). (Arai)
