(Family):Gill opening well developed. Anterior nostril well above upper lip. Dorsal, anal, and caudal fins continuous. Supramaxillary present. (Genus):Barbel present on snout and lower jaw. Body wholly covered with small cycloid scales. Pelvic fin with two rays, inserted at about below preopercle. Basibranchial tooth patch absent. Branchiostegals 8. Developed gill rakers on 1st arch less than 4. (Species):Vertical fins dark, becomming gradually darker at the extreme blackish edge. Head length 23〜25% of SL. Vomerine and palatine tooth bands very narrow in specimens examined.
Distribution:
Middle western Atlantic.
Remarks:
Five species of this genus are known. B. barbata is a sole species in the Atlantic (Hubbs, 1944). (Arai)
