Distinctive characters:
(Genus):Eye small. Base of dorsal fin shorter than that of anal. Both sexes with supracaudal and infracaudal luminous glands, these glands consisting of a series of overlapping scale-like structures not bordered by black pigment. SAO strongly angulated. Four VO. Five PO, PO4 highly elevated. Two Pol. Four Prc, often continuous with AOp. (Species):Pectoral fins long, extending beyond origin of anal fin. No cheek phtophores. No luminous scale at base of adipose fin. SAO1 directly over VO3. VO level. Prc3 at level of Prc1. INGL occupying about 4/5 of ventral aspect of caudal peduncle. Gill rakers 4+1+9. Procurrent caudal rays 7 (dorsal)/7〜8 (ventral). Pectoral fin rays 13〜14. AO 6〜7+6〜8, total 12〜14*.
Distribution:
Tropical waters of three major oceans. Type locality-western Indian Ocean.
