本種はB. Ocellatusに似るが,尾鰭の暗色斑が本種では水平に並ぶのに対し,B. ocellatusでは垂直に並ぶ(Hoese and Moore,1977)。
Distinctive characters:
Body rhomboid and strongly compressed, body depth 1.6 in SL. Mouth large, upper jaw length 4.6 in head length. Teeth in both jaws small, arranged irregularly in 2 rows. Eyes on left side of body; interorbital space wider than eye diameter. Origin of dorsal fin anterior to eye, the anterior rays unbranched. Base of pelvic fin of ocular side much longer and the first ray inserted notably anterior to fin of blind side. Pectoral fin much elongated in male. Caudal fin convex. Lateral line strongly arched above pectoral fin. Scales on ocular side ctenoid, cycloid on blind side. Body brown with irregular dark brown blotches; caudal fin with 3 dark brown blotches.
Distribution:
From Gulf of Mexico to Suriname.
Remarks:
This spacies is similar to Bothus ocellatus but differs from it by having horizontally arranged dark blotches in the caudal fin (in the latter the blotches arranged vertically). (Matsuura)
