Body oblong and strongly compressed, body depth 2.2〜2.3 in SL. Mouth large, posterior end of upper jaw reaching to below center of eye. Teeth in both jaws slightly curved inward. Eyes on left side of body separated from each other by a interorbital ridge. Origin of dorsal fin above anterior edge of eye, several anterior rays greatly elongated. Base of pelvic fin of ocular side about equal to that of blind side and not inserted anterior to fin of blind side. Pelvic fin of ocular side greatly elongated. Caudal fin convex. Lateral line strongly arched above pectoral fin. Scales on ocular side ctenoid. Body brown with 3 large ocellated dark brown spots; dorsal, anal and caudal fins dusky with irregular dark brown blotches.
Distribution:
From North Carolina to Suriname.
Remarks:
This species is separated from other Atlantic bothids by the following points:the anterior rays of the dorsal fin greatly elongated, the base of the pelvic fin of ocular side about equal to that of blind side, the pelvic fin of ocular side greatly produced, and 3 large ocellated dark brown spots on the body.
