Body elliptical and strongly compressed, body depth 2.2 in SL. Mouth rather large, posterior end of upper jaw reaching to below center of eye. Teeth conical, arranged in 2 rows in upper jaw and a silnge row in lower jaw; anterior teeth larger than lateral teeth. Eyes on left side of body; interorbital space wider than eye diameter. Origin of dorsal fin anterior to eye. Pectoral fin greatly elongated in male. Base of pelvic fin of ocular side about equal to that of blind side. Caudal fin convex. Lateral line almost straight, not arched above pectoral fin. Ocular side of body covered with ctenoid scales, blind side with cycloid scales. Body brown, diagonal dark brown lines from eye to snout.
Distribution:
From North Carolina to Brazil.
Remarks:
This species is separated from other Atlantic bothids by the following points:the base of pelvic fin of the ocular side about equal to that of the blind side, the lateral line almost straight, the posterior end of upper jaw reaching to below the center of eye, and the upper jaw teeth arranged in 2 rows.
