Body elliptical and strongly compressed, body depth 2.1 in SL. Mouth large, posterior end of upper jaw extending beyond posterior margin of eye. Teeth in both jaws in a single row; anterior teeth canine-like. Eyes on left side of body; interorbital space narrower than eye diameter. Origin of dorsal fin anterior to eye. Base of pelvic fin of ocular side about equal to that of blind side. Caudal fin convex. Lateral line almost straight, not arched above pectoral fin. All scales cycloid. Body brown with a dark brown blotch beneath pectoral fin; dorsal and anal fins each with 2 ocellated dark brown spots; caudal fin brown with 3 dark brown blotches.
Distribution:
From Gulf of Mexico to Brazil.
Remarks:
This species is separable from other Atlantic bothids by the following points:the base of the pevic fin of ocular side about equal to that of blind side, the lateral line almost straight and not arched above the pectoral fin, the mouth large and the posterior end of the upper jaw reaching beyond the posterior edge of eye, the teeth in both jaws in a single row, all scales cycloid, and the caudal fin with 3 dark brown blotches.
