Body ovate and strongly compressed, body depth 1.8 in SL. Dorsal profile of head straight. Mouth small, posterior end of upper jaw below anterior margin of eye. Teeth in both jaws small, anterior teeth equal to lateral teeth in size. Eyes on left side of body; interorbital space with a ridge, narrower than eye diameter. Origin of dorsal fin slightly anterior to eye. Base of pelvic fin of ocular side about equal to that of blind side and not inserted anterior to fin of blind side. Caudal fin rounded. Lateral line almost straight, not arched above pectoral fin. Ocular side of body covered with ctenoid scales, blind side with cycloid scales. Body brown and fins blackish brown.

From Suriname to Brazil.

This species is separated from other species of Etropus by the following points:the body depth 1.8〜2.0 in SL and the dorsal profile of head almost straight. (Matsuura)
