特 徴：
体は細長く，側扁する。体長は体高の3.1～3.2倍。上顎の後端は眼の前半下に達する。下顎の下面に1対の小孔と1縦溝がある。前鰓蓋骨の縁辺は細かな鋸歯状を呈する。背鰭と臀鰭の軟条部は基部から縁辺まで鱗を被る。側線より下方の鱗は体軸に並行にならぶ。尾鰭は2叉する。体の地色は黄色を帯びた銀色で，体側上方を数本の褐色線が縦走する。尾鰭基部に1黒色斑がある。鰭はすべて灰色。
分 布：
コロンビアからフレンチギアナまでの南米北東岸の浅海。
備 考：
本種は同属のH. aurolineatumとH. striatumに似る。しかし前者では体高は高く，鰓耙数が24～28本と少ないこと，後者では側線より下方の鱗が体軸に対して斜めにならぶので区別できる。

Distinctive characters：
Body elongate and compressed. Body depth 3.1～3.2 in SL. Posterior edge of upper jaw reaching to below anterior half of eye. Two pores and a median groove on chin. Preopercle finely serrated. Soft portions of dorsal and anal fins scaled to their margins. Scales below lateral line arranged parallel to body axis. Caudal fin forked. Body silver with a tinge of yellow; several longitudinal dark brown lines on dorsal part of body; a black blotch on base of caudal fin; all fins dusky.
Distribution：
Northeastern South America from Colombia to French Guiana.
Remarks：
This species resembles H. aurolineatum and H. striatum. It differs from these two species by the following characters：the number of gill rakers 31～35 (24～28 in H. aurolineatum), scales below lateral line oblique to body axis (parallel to body axis in H. striatum).
