Body elongate and compressed. Body depth 3.1〜3.2 in SL. Posterior edge of upper jaw reaching to below anterior half of eye. Two pores and a median groove on chin. Preopercle finely serrated. Soft portions of dorsal and anal fins scaled to their margins. Scales below lateral line arranged parallel to body axis. Caudal fin forked. Body silver with a tinge of yellow; several longitudinal dark brown lines on dorsal part of body; a black blotch on base of caudal fin; all fins dusky.
Distribution:
Northeastern South America from Colombia to French Guiana.
Remarks:
This species resembles H. aurolineatum and H. striatum. It differs from these two species by the following characters:the number of gill rakers 31〜35 (24〜28 in H. aurolineatum), scales below lateral line oblique to body axis (parallel to body axis in H. striatum).
