Body elliptical and compressed. Body depth 2.5〜2.8 in SL. Posterior edge of upper jaw not reaching to below anterior edge of eye. Two pores and a median groove on chin. Preopercle finely serrated with no enlarged spines at lower posterior angle. Teeth on both jaws small, arranged in bands. Eye moderately large, its diameter 4.0〜4.1 in head length. Spines of dorsal and anal fins enclosed basally in a scaly sheath. Caudal fin emarginate. Body dusky dorsally, silver ventrally; a dark brown spot on centers of scales above lateral line; dorsal and pelvic fons yellowish brown; anal fin yellowish brown with dark brown edge; caudal fin dark brown.
Distribution:
Southern Caribbean Sea and South America to Brazil, found in waters over sandy, rocky or muddy bottoms to about 70 m deep.
Remarks:
This species is separable from O. poeyi and O. chrysoptera by the following points:12〜13 anal rays in O. poeyi and lateral-line scales 55〜58 in O. chrysoptera.
