Due to the ill-developed posterolateral expansions and the strongly arched anterolateral borders, the contour of carapace is distinctly elliptical; dorsal surface thickly covered with fine granules and uneven, with five longitudinal rows of some low tubercles. Anterolateral border crenulate, with about 15 small conical teeth, grading into inconspicuous posterolateral wing; anterior border of wing cut into four conical teeth, and posterior border with two angulated lobes. Chelipeds enormous; lobular fringe of merus cut into four teeth, and a proximal tooth of palm much sharper than them; two rows of granulated ridges from proximal tooth of palm, one to base of immovable finger and the other to distal end of upper border of palm; six or seven teeth on upper border of palm.
Distribution:
West Atlantic from North Carolina through the Gulf of Mexico and the West Indies to French Guiana, 10-180 m deep.
Remarks:
Three spots on carapace, and dots of good size on frontorbital border and on teeth of upper border of palm are always distinct, but a small spot on carpus of cheliped is often inconspicuous
