Body slender, with smooth carapace and abdomen; grooves shallow; hepatic and antennal spines strong, and a small branchiostegal spine behind anterior border of carapace; a longitudinal suture from bottom of orbit to posterior border of carapace, and a short transverse one from posterior one-third of lower border of carapace. Rostrum slender, distal half being weakly deflexed and tip being somewhat upturned; upper margin with seven teeth; epigastric tooth at some distance behind last rostral tooth; dorsal border of carapace behind epigastric tooth bluntly carinate throughout its whole length. Fourth to sixth abdominal segments carinate dorsally, ending each in a sharp tooth; sixth segment about twice the length of preceding segment. Telson with a subterminal immovable spine at each side.
Distribution:
West Atlantic from Massachusetts through the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea to French Guiana, and East Atlantic from the Mediterranean Sea and Portugal to Angola, 20-700 m deep.
