A typical Penaeus species, with a roundish, dark reddish-brown spot at the juncture of third and fourth abdominal segments. Gastro-frontal sulcus broad, with sharp lateral carina, extending to about one-sixth as long as carapace; orbito-antennal sulcus wide anteriorly, narrowing posteriorly and widening to base of hepatic spine; gastro-orbital and antennal carinae prominent. Antennal spine slender, and hepatic spine prominent. Rostrum straight apically, dental formula being 7-11/0-3 (mode 8/2); position of ventral teeth variable. Postrostral carina strong and extending almost to near posterior margin of carapace; median sulcus deep and long; adrostral sulcus deep, somewhat expanded at level of epigastric tooth, and broad, adrostral carina being prominent.

West Atlantic from North Carolina through the coasts of the Caribbean Sea to southern Brazil, 3-365 (usually 45-65) m deep.
