A typical Penaeus species. Gastro-frontal sulcus broad, and gastro-frontal carina sharp and ends anteriorly in an acute orbital angle; orbito-antennal sulcus wide anteriorly and narrowing posteriorly; gastro-orbital and antennal carinae prominent; cervical sulcus one-fifth to one-fourth the length of carapace, ending slightly anterior to midlength of carapace; hepatic carina about equal in length to cervical sulcus; antennal and hepatic spines pronounced. Rostrum straight apically and convex proximally, with dental formula 7-9/0-2 (mode 8/2); highest portion of rostrum at level of third dorsal tooth. Postrostral carina strong and extending almost to posterior margin of carapace; median sulcus deep throughout; adrostral sulcus broad and deep.
Distribution:
West Atlantic from the Caribbean Sea to southern Brazil, and the East Atlantic from Mauritania to Angola, 3-100 m deep, with an exceptional record of 720 m.
Remarks:
In the northern pink shrimp, P. duorarum Burkenroad, the dorsolateral sulcus of the sixth abdominal segment is very narrow and often almost closed.
