Specimens examined：3 (SL 64.5〜115.8 mm).
Counts：D �]�T〜�]�U, 10〜11; A �V, 6; P₁ 19〜20; GR 6〜7+9〜11=15〜18.

　（科）：頭部が大きく，多くの棘がある。眼下骨棚が発達している。尾鰭は2叉しない。（亜科）：本種はシロカサゴ亜科に属し，側線はうすい膜状の鱗によって覆われた溝を形成している。頭骨はうすく，感覚管は著しく発達する。第3と第4眼下骨がない。（属）：臀鰭は3棘6軟条であるが，幼魚では2棘。眼前骨は縮小して小さい。生時において，体は柔かい。幽門垂は5本。鰾はないか，痕跡的。体高は高く，標準体長の37〜52％。（種）：1属1種なので属と同じ。体色は黒い。 　日本，ハワイ，ニューカレドニア，ガラパゴス，メキシコ湾〜カリブ海，スリナム沖，アフリカ西岸低緯度海域。　（上野・佐藤） 　(Family)：Head large with many spines; infraorbital stay well developed; caudal fin not forked.
