Specimens examined：3 (SL 81.4～121.5 mm).
Counts：D ⅩⅡ, 9; A Ⅲ, 5; P1 17～19; GR 4～5+9～10=13～15.
特 徴：
（科）：頭部が大きく，多くの棘がある。眼下骨棚が発達している。尾鰭は2叉しない。（属）：背鰭棘は12本（例外的に13本）。背鰭軟条は10本以下。側線鱗には管が開口している。頭骨は頑丈で，眼上棘と眼後棘がある。体は円鱗で覆われる。側線は尾鰭の基部まで伸びる。（種）：後頭窩がある。眼前骨の主上顎骨と重なる部分に2棘がある。前鰓蓋骨の第1棘は小棘を備える。胸鰭の内側基部に暗褐色の点が存在しない。背鰭の第3～5棘条から第5～7棘条の間の鰭膜に暗褐色の斑紋がある。眼下骨隆起に棘状の突起はない。眼径は吻長の0.9～1.5倍。
分 布：
パナマからブラジルのリオデジャネイロ付近まで。
備 考：
近似のS. bergiiは背鰭棘条部に暗褐色の斑紋がないので区別される。 （上野・佐藤）
Distinctive characters：
(Family)：Head large with many spines; infraorbital stay developed; caudal fin not forked. (Genus)：Dorsal spines 12; dorsal soft rays less than 10; lateral line scales with tube and pore; cranium robust with supraocular and postocular spines; body covered with cycloid scales; lateral line complete reaching caudal fin base. (Species)：Occipital pit present; a part of preorbital bone overlapping maxillary, with 2 spines. Supplemental preopercular spine present; no dark spot on inner basal part of pectoral fin; dark brown spots on membrane between 3～4th and 5～7th dorsal spines; no spines on suborbital ridge; eye diameter 0.9～1.5 times of snout length.
