Specimens examined：3 (SL 66.0～82.6 mm).
Counts：D ⅩⅡ, 8～9; A Ⅲ, 5; P1 19～20; GR 3～4+9=12～13.
特 徴：
（科）：頭部が大きく，多くの棘がある。眼下骨棚が発達している。尾鰭は2叉しない。（属）：背鰭棘は12本（例外的に13本）。背鰭軟条は10本以下。側線鱗には管が開口している。頭骨は頑丈で，眼上棘と眼後棘がある。体は円鱗で覆われる。側線は尾鰭の基部まで伸びる。（種）：後頭窩はない。眼前骨の主上顎骨と重なる部分に2本の棘がある（図）。前鰓蓋骨の第1棘は小棘を備えない。眼の角膜の上部に小さなきのこが逆さになった形のものが見える（図）。
分 布：
北米フロリダからスリナム沖まで。 （上野・佐藤）
Distinctive characters：
(Family)：Head large with many spines; infraorbital stay developed; caudal fin not forked. (Genus)：Dorsal spines 12; dorsal soft rays less than 10; lateral line scales with tube and pore; cranium robust with supraocular and postocular spine; body covered with cycloid scales; lateral line complete reaching caudal fin base. (Species)：No occipial pit; 2 spines present on a part of preorbital overlapping maxillary (Fig.); no supplemental preopercular spine; small mushroom-like tabs on upper part of cornea present (Fig.).
Distribution：
Western Atlantic, from Florida to Suriname. (Uyeno and Sato)
