Counts：D ⅩⅡ, 10; A Ⅲ, 5; P1 19～20; GR 6～8+7=13～15.
特 徴：
（科）：頭部が大きく，多くの棘がある。眼下骨棚が発達している。尾鰭は2叉しない。（属）：背鰭棘は12本。背鰭軟条は10本以下。側線鱗には管が開口している。頭骨は頑丈で，眼上棘と眼後棘がある。後頭窩がない。体は櫛鱗で覆われる。側線は完全で尾鰭の基部まで伸びる。胸鰭の鰭条は分枝しない。眼前骨の主上顎骨と重なる部分に2本の棘がある。前鰓蓋骨の第1棘は小棘を備える。（種）：背鰭軟条数は9～10。胸鰭鰭条数は19～20。吻長は眼径にほぼ等しい。背鰭第3棘は著しく延長することはない。
分 布：
ベネズエラ沖からスリナム沖にかけて分布する。採集深度の記録は約400m (Eschmeyer, 1965b)。 （上野・佐藤）
Distinctive characters：
(Family)：Head large with many spines; infraorbital stay developed; caudal fin not forked. (Genus)：Dorsal spines 12; dorsal soft rays less than 10; lateral-line scales with tube and pore; cranium robust with supraocular and postocular spines; no occipital pit; body covered with ctenoid scales; lateral line complete reaching caudal fin base; pectoral rays unbranched; a part of preorbital bone overlapping maxillary, with 2 spines; supplemental preopercular spine present. (Species)：Dorsal soft rays 9～10; pectoral rays 19～20; snout length almost equal to orbit diameter; 3rd dorsal spine not elongated.
Distribution：
From Venezuela to Suriname. Deepest catch record about 400 m deep (Eschmeyer, 1965b). (Uyeno and Sato)
