(Family):Three lowermost pectoral rays free. No barbel on lower jaw. (Genus):No spinous plate on both sides of dorsal fin base. Dorsal spines usually 10. Scales present on opercular membrane. (Species):Serrated rostral exsertion extending beyond upper lip, with a small spine directing backwardly at its posterior end. Second infraorbital bone with a spine. Third infraorbital bone with a vestigial small spine. Preocular region serrated, one of the spines distinctly long. No supraocular spine. A triangular projection present on postocular region. Preopercular spine with a supplemental small spine at its base. Median pectoral rays longer than upper and lower rays. Length of pectoral fin 37〜47% of SL. Thorax mostly covered with scales, only triangular area of jugular not covered. No distinct spot on 1st dorsal fin. No fleshy flap on dorsal region of eye. Orbit diameter 18〜21% of HL. Interorbital width 58〜81% of orbit diameter.

Remarks:
Although this species is similar to P. rubio according to Ginsburg (1950), the latter is distinguishable by having a dark spot on 1st dorsal fin. (Uyeno and Sato)
