特 徴：
（種）：上唇を越える鋸歯状の吻突起があり，吻突起後端に後向きの強い1棘がない。第2眼下骨と第3眼下骨に棘がない。眼前棘は1本。眼上棘がない。眼後部に鈍い三角形の突起がある。前鰓蓋骨に長い1棘があり，その棘の基部に付加的な小棘がない。胸鰭は中央部の鰭条が最も長い。胸鰭長は標準体長の53～56％。胸部の有鱗域は胸鰭最下部軟条の基部より前方へ広がる。背鰭の第4棘と第5棘の間に1黒斑がある。眼の上部に皮弁がない。眼窩径は頭長の20～21％。両眼間隔は眼窩径の44～50％。
分 布：
ノース・カロライナからメキシコ湾，プエルトリコ，およびスリナム沖。
備 考：
頭部の棘の状態が本種に似るP. ophryasは胸鰭軟条が14+3本で，眼の上部に皮弁を有することで区別できる。 （上野・佐藤）
Distinctive characters：
(Species)：Serrated rostral exsertion extending beyond upper lip, without long spine directing backwardly at its posterior end. Second and 3rd infraorbital bones without spines. Preocular spine single. No supraocular spine. A blunt triangular projection present on postocular region. Preopercular spine without supplemintal small spine at its base. Median pectoral rays longer than upper and lower rays. Length of pectoral fin 53～56％ of SL. Scaly area on thorax extending forwardly beyond bases of lowermost pectoral rays. A dark spot present between 4th and 5th dorsal spines. No fleshy flap on dorsal region of eye.
Distribution：
From North Carolina, Gulf of Mexico to Suriname.
Remarks：
P. ophryas is distinguishable from this species by pectoral rays (14+3) and fleshy flaps on dorsal region of eye. (Uyeno and Sato)
