特 徴：
体はやや長く，側扁する。前鰓蓋骨の縁辺は鋸歯状で，主鰓蓋骨の後方に扁平な2棘がある。頭部背面と主上顎骨は鱗を被らない。背鰭と臀鰭の軟条部の基部は鱗を被らない。臀鰭第2棘は第3棘より短い。両顎の歯は微小で歯帯を形成し，外側の歯はやや大きく，上顎の前方に1対の犬歯があり，下顎前方の歯も犬歯状となる。腹鰭は長く，臀鰭起部に達する。尾鰭は深く湾入し，上葉と下葉は延長する。体の背方は淡赤色で腹方は銀白色。鰭はすべて淡黄色。
分 布：
メキシコ湾からスリナムまで。
備 考：
本種はシロガネハナダイHemanthias leptusに似るが，側線鱗数が少ない（42～43枚に対し61～62枚）ので区別できる。 （松浦）
Distinctive characters：
Body relatively elongate and compressed. Preopercular margin serrated; posterior part of opercle with 2 flat spines. Top of head and maxilla scaleless. Bases of soft portions of dorsal and anal fins without scales. Second anal spine shorter than the third. Teeth on both jaws villiform in bands; the outer series slightly enlarged; upper jaw with an anterior pair of canines, anterior teeth on lower jaw canine-like. Pelvic fin long, its tip reaching to origin of anal fin. Caudal fin deeply emarginate, upper and lower lobes elongated. Body pale red dorsally, silver-white ventrally; fins pale yellow.
Distribution：
From Gulf of Mexico to Suriname.
Remarks：
This species is similar to Hemanthias leptus but separable from it by having the fewer number of lateral-line scales. (Matsuura)
