特 徴：
体はやや長く，側扁する。頭は長く頭長の41％。前鰓蓋骨の隅角部に鋸歯がある。主鰓蓋骨の後方に扁平な3棘がある。腹鰭は胸鰭基部の下方に位置し，胸鰭より短い。背鰭棘は背鰭軟条部よりも高く，背鰭第2棘は第3棘より長い。棘条背鰭の鰭膜に欠刻はない。背鰭と臀鰭の軟条部の基部は鱗を被る。尾鰭は截形。体の背方は褐色で腹方は白色。背鰭と臀鰭は褐色で縁辺は黒色。胸鰭と腹鰭は褐色。尾鰭は褐色で後縁は黒色。
分 布：
フロリダ，バーミューダ島からスリナムまで。ブラジルにも分布する。
備 考：
本種は背鰭棘条部の鰭膜に欠刻がないのでマハタ属の他種から識別できる。 （松浦）
Distinctive characters：
Body relatively elongate and compressed. Head long, 41% of SL. Preopercle with serrae at the angle; posterior part of opercle with 3 flat spines. Pelvic fin shorter than pectoral fin and inserted below ventral end of pectoral base. Dorsal spines longer than the longest soft dorsal fin ray, the second dorsal spine longer than the third. No notches in spinous dorsal fin. Bases of soft portions of dorsal and anal fins covered with scales. Caudal fin truncate. Body brown dorsally, white ventrally; dorsal and anal fins brown with black edge; pectoral and pelvic fins brown; caudal fin brown with posterior marginal black line.
Distribution：
From Florida, Bermuda to Suriname. Brazil.
Remarks：
This species is separable from other species of Epinephelus by having no notches in the spinous dorsal fin. (Matsuura)
