Body relatively elongate and compressed. Head long, 37〜39% of SL. Preopercle with prominent serrae at the angle; posterior part of opercle with 3 flat spines. Bases of soft portions of dorsal and anal fins covered with scales. Scales on body ctenoid, relatively smooth. Caudal fin slightly emarginate. Body dusky brown dorsally with dark brown blotches, becoming pale ventrally; spinous dorsal fin yellowish brown with black margin; pelvic and anal fins dark brown with white anterior margin; pectoral and caudal fins dusky brown.

Remarks:
The genus Mycteroperca is different from other serranid genera by having a long head and 11 soft rays in the anal fin. This species is distinguishable from other species of Mycteroperca by 26〜36 gill rakers on the first arch and the vertical fins without elongation. (Matsuura)
